These Certificates (sometimes referred to as marriage licences) can be used for
legal and official purposes. You will need a marriage certificate if you are applying
for a divorce, or claiming a pension in joint names. All certificates are government
certified for official use.
Marriage certificates can be also essential records for carrying out family history
research especially when looking for the next line of enquiry.
Marriage certificates are needed when applying for a Divorce, for Pension applications
etc. Individuals also like obtaining duplicate Marriage copies for Anniversaries

Our Marriage records are limited to the beginning of civil registration within each
country. For States of Jersey this dates back to July 1st 1837.
Marriage certificates provide:
- Full names of the married couple
- Bride's maiden name
- Date of marriage
- Place of Marriage (district or street and town)
- Names of parents (including mother's maiden name
These replacement documents are certified for use for all legal purposes, including
passport applications and employer identification. Any Marriage certificate within
England and Wales,
Scotland,
Northern Ireland States
of Guernsey, States
of Jersey, Isle
of Many and Ireland
can be re-issued, as well as Marriage registered
overseas but were registered with the appropriate States of Jersey
authority within the country of Marriage. These would include Armed Forces, Consular,
High Commission or Embassy registrations. Please bear in mind that Marriage registration
with the British authorities is not compulsory when overseas, and a duplicate certificate
can only be issued if the Marriage certificate has been deposited with either the
Embassy or Consulate within the country of Marriage, or at the Foreign & Commonwealth
Office in London upon return to the States of Jersey.
The certificates are always produced by an official registration office and can
be validated at any time. Where British nationals are born abroad, we can additionally
supply copies of certificates relating to any States of Jersey Marriages abroad
registered at a Consulate, High Commission, or with the Armed Forces. This service
only applies to those Marriages that have actually been registered with the States
of Jersey authorities.
What is Public Records?
Under States of Jersey law, Marriage certificates are known as Public Records which
means that any person can apply for a copy of any certificate, providing that they
know the details of the Marriage that is required. This can be helpful for both
government and legal services needing proof of Marriage, as well as family history
(genealogy) researchers looking to discover new ancestors. Please note however that
where we believe an application to be connected with an attempt to obtain information
for the purposes of identity fraud, the application may be rejected and details
passed to the relevant police authority.
