Birth Certificate England and Wales

Whether you need your birth certificate to get a passport or other legal document, getting a copy does not have to be a hassle.

Most genealogical resources group England and Wales together, because they were administered together. Over one hundred and fifty years ago, more precisely from 1 July 1837, civil authorities in England and Wales have recorded all births, deaths and marriages. Thus, all the certificates that record these events have been archived, and copies have been given to those requesting them.

For family researchers, this means that they can work with information from other generations, beyond what they know. For example, you surely do not know where your great-grandparents lived, but by obtaining the birth certificate of the same great-grandparents, you can discover this and other information.

Obtaining a UK birth certificate is relatively straightforward, whether it's a copy of your birth certificate or an ancestor. Birth certificates in England and Wales can be ordered directly from the website of UK GRO Certificates. The full certificate will be delivered to you.  Note that all births registered in Scotland can be searched, accessed and retrieved online for a nominal price. The process for England and Wales is both more expensive and more complicated.

Adopted Child Birth Certificate

For an adopted child the birth certificate can only be obtained if the original full birth name of the child is known. We cannot issue a birth certificate using an adopted name. In these cases, an Adoption Certificate would be more appropriate. The  Adoption Certificate would be presented wherever the birth certificate is required.
